About service 

“WiFi-network” service allows Kyivstar subscribers, being within Ukraine, to get access to Internet using mobile devices – handsets, PPC and laptops, that have internal or external IEEE 802.11b/g standard support adapters. 

Using mobile device and being in Wi-Fi access point, you can browse WEB-pages; work with email, as well as applications and programs that require Internet connection.

Technology description: 

Wi-Fi is the abbreviation from Wireless Fidelity, which designates standard of wireless communication uniting several protocols and has official name IEEE 802.11 (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers – international organization which develops standards in the field of electronic technologies). Nowadays, the most popular and widespread is IEEE 802.11b protocol that defines wireless networks’ functioning. 

Maximal distance of signal is 100 m, but at open can reach up to 300-400 m.

Besides IEEE 802.11b there are 802.11a, using 5 GHz frequency and providing maximal rate 54 Mbit/sec, 802.11g, using 2,4 GHz frequency and providing rate 54 Mbit/sec. At the moment, 802.11n standard is being developed, which will provide rate up to 320 Mbit/sec.

The core of Wi-Fi wireless network is access point, which is connected to ground-based infrastructure (Internet provider channels) and provides radio signal transfer. As the rule, access point comprises receiver, transmitter, interface and soft for data processing. Around access point is formed territory with a radius 50-100 m (which is called hot-spot or Wi-Fi zone), within this territory one can use wireless connection.

In order to connect to access point and get advantage of wireless communication, owner of laptop or other mobile device simply should get within the radius of its action. All steps on device defining and network setting, as usual, are done automatically by the majority of computer operational systems. If the user is within two hot-spots simultaneously – connection is done to access point with more powerful signal.
